The Armed Forces
Military service age and obligation: 18 years of age (17 years of age with parental consent) for male and female voluntary service; maximum enlistment age 42 (Army), 31 (Air Force), 34 (Navy), 29 (Marines); service obligation 8 years, including 2-5 years active duty (Army), 2-3 years active (Navy), 4 years active (Air Force, Marines) (2010)
History:
While the Royal Federation had an Army and Navy for hundreds of years, after the Centric Reformations, the Federation did not maintain a military except for a small force known as the judicial forces and the Senatorial Committee as "keepers of peace." Each republic maintained their own security forces used to combat small threats and to protect the interests of their governments. There was no centralized command during years after the reformations and the Senate and Federation loathed to change this. Since most of the military power within the Royal Federation's territory was not actually controlled by the central government itself, but by foreign nations or organizations such as Technocorp and the United Banking Corporation, the ability of the Senate to enforce its decrees was severely limited, and it was forced to rely on the Senatorial Committee. Conversely, however, the United Trade Corporation and other cartels within the Federation, some of which are represented in the Senate, held that a Central government which lacked significant military power was just what they wanted, since it couldn't control them.
The Civil Wars changed all this. The Federation initially had no standing military to deal with the Separatist Republics; therefore a Military Creation Act was propose, which was strongly opposed by many of the Federation's pacifist leaders. They feared of an on-going war.
However, an army had already been created in secret years before by the Senatorial Committee. When it became clear that the Separatists had no intention of negotiating with the Federation, the Federation adopted this army as the Guardians of Peace, along with AT-TE walkers, gunships, and other of the Federation's open fleet, most of which were produced by Gordon Heavy Engineering. The Royal Federation's war effort was initially hindered because most of the major industrial combines that the Federation had, under the aegis of the Technocorp, sided with the Separatists. The rapid militarization of the Federation during the Civil War, overseen by the Supreme Chancellor, had far-reaching effects: the Senate's powers were reduced, the military became the primary arm of the government, and the Federation swiftly transitions into an new order.
The Imperial Army became the largest armies ever assembled (during that time).
The Royal Federation currently has the largest military in the world.
